Building of Vantaa light rail progresses full speed ahead in December - implementation agreement signed
Building of Vantaa light rail will really get going in December 2025, when the light rail alliance’s implementation stage begins. The alliance partners signed the agreement on the implementation stage on November 26, 2025.
The second client of the light rail project, in addition to the City of Vantaa, is Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY). Another client in the eastern alliance is Pääkaupunkiseudun Kaupunkiliikenne Oy (Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd) that represents the City of Helsinki's share in Mellunmäki. In addition, Kaupunkiliikenne Oy implements a depot serving Vantaa light rail in Vaarala. The aim is to start building the depot in 2026.
Building of Vantaa light rail is distributed between two alliances. One alliance is responsible for the western part of the light rail project, between Helsinki-Vantaa Airport–Tikkurila, as well as the Tikkurila tunnel, while the other alliance is responsible for the eastern part between Kuninkaala–Mellunmäki. The western part of the project is built by Destia, with Sitowise Oy and Ramboll Finland Oy as the designers, and the eastern part is built by GRK Suomi Oy and Kreate Oy, with AFRY Finland Oy, Sweco Finland Oy and WSP Finland Oy as the designers.

Vantaa is developing into a light rail city where public transportation functions even better than at present, and the rails will enable growth in several more areas,” says Tero Anttila, deputy mayor of Urban Environment Department.
Vantaa City Council ratified the revised project plan of Vantaa light rail on November 17, 2025. The revised cost estimate of the project plan of Vantaa light rail amounts to around €750 million, of which Vantaa's financing share is €541 million.
Building Vantaa light rail begins in 2025, and traffic is scheduled to begin at the end of 2029.
Light rail construction sites to begin in December
Vantaa light rail construction sites will begin their work in December in several locations. In the Aviapolis major region, work begins in Plootukallio area. On Tikkurilantie, the construction expands in stages between Päivänkakkarantie and Kielotie. In downtown Tikkurila, building the light rail tunnel continues on the current construction sites. Tikkurila station will serve passengers as usual during the entire construction period.
On Kyytitie, preparing the construction sites begins in Kuninkaala, between Heidehof traffic circle and Kaskela. In Rajakylä, preparing the construction sites is seen on Länsimäentie, near Porvoonväylä bridge, outside the street areas.
